BUMPER POST OF STUFF

OK leaving for Perth early tomorrow morning. Can't wait to see everyone there... and also have romantic evenings with Mark on the vineyards (I must have been to Perth like 10 times in my life, mostly as a child, but I've never been to the vineyards at Margaret River before).

Will get hold of an internet connection as often as I can, and upload pics and tell you stuff :)

Meanwhile... I've prepared a bumper post of random stuff that might interest you.. so you won't have to go cold turkey until my next post. Me so good to youuuuu. :D
-----------------------------

This is the Mortley Crew in Perth. This pic was taken 8 years ago!!! Time flies! Costume party, otherwise they look pretty normal. Loud (!)... but normal. :)

Actually, not everyone is in this picture... the whole family consists of my mom's 4 brothers and sisters, plus their spouses and kids, so I have almost 20 cousins there. 2 of those cousins are already married, and have 5 more little kids altogether. And there's my grandmother too. Big happy family.

Now that my eyelashes have grown back... I'm looking for a new place to do my eyelash extensions. :) The previous one I used to frequent was Vain Beauty, and well.. even though I liked the barbie lashes they did on me and their lashes last a long time (more than a month! Well worth the $50!), I did look like a fright when they finally came off! Maybe their glue is too strong.

So, my next quest is to find my new eyelash place! Just checked out this new place called Nailz Treats at #04-42 Far East Plaza. Their eyelash extension costs $59. I did it, looks natural. I did the 8mm one instead of 12mm which I used to do a Vain Beauty.
The staff there are friendly and all speak english (not china workers), so that's good. They also have nail extensions and stuff... worth checking this place out if you like mani-pedis at good prices.

But they don't do the individual lash extensions (like the ones I did in Bandung), they do it in clumps of 3 strands. This place is pretty good, I have no complaints, but I will go on checking places out.

Here's one of the make-up tutorials I did in colaboration with MyFatPocket and ettusais. Enjoy!!! Will share the other videos with you soon.

Joke :)

Three hookers are in a bar. The first hooker said,"I bet you five pounds that I could put three fingers up my pussy."Then the second hooker said, "I bet I could put my whole fist up my pussy I've been f****d that much!"The third hooker said nothing and just slid down the stool.

Ok, that's all folks! I need to go pack. See you when I see you!

Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny Feels

Just last week... there was an uproar when the waif supermodel Kate Moss commented that, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels."
If that is what she wants to live by then so be it. So what if she exercises, doesn’t over eat and doesn't eat junk food??? I say, good on her!
Why do people practically gun down skinny women who are in the limelight... saying they are bad role models for younger girls. Yet other women who either have had plastic surgery or are obese... are not scrutinised the same way. Are they any better role models for a healthy body image?
Now don't get me wrong.. I do love Oprah.. and I'm not saying Skinny is good and Fat is bad. All I'm saying if we're so obsessed over the perfectly natural and healthy body image... then don't we have to be fair and criticise the women with silicon or women who are obese too?? Because if we put fat people and/or surgically enhanced people on TV, then aren't we encouraging young impressionable teens to not exercise, just and eat and eat and just be fat yet successful? Or make them feel unattractive unless they splash out for a set of fake tits or a new nose?
How is being skinny any worse an influence than any of that???
And what about pro athletes? Pro athletes risk their health and body to play during injuries, they exert their bodies to the point where their immune systems are compromised…. (and make a lot of money because of it)... yet it's perfectly ok?

Why just attack the skinny?

The fashion industry has been criticised for using "size zero" models... if they succumb to pressure and stop the use of size zero models, wouldn't they be discriminating against the women who out of their own volition just prefer to be size zero? ( Since we're on this topic... many studies have shown that Anorexia cannot be picked up by looking at photographs of super-thin models anyway!)

Imagine if we denied someone a spot as an actor or news anchor or any figure of influence (e.g. politician), because he/she is over weight or is a smoker or has wrinkly skin from too much sun worshipping or has a plastic nose. Would that be fair?

Of course not. So why should it be okay to discriminate against skinny people. Is being obese any less of a choice or any less unhealthy as being skinny? I don't think so.
I'm not advocating pro-anorexia sentiments here... but neither am I saying that you should just not have self control, eat like a pig, hardly exercise and then be horrified at the thought of others being svelte and persecute them!

Blame it on your genes/stress/big bones... or go into denial... whatever... I'm not here to judge you. Live the way you want to, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But just realise that skinny is not a crime either.

I just happen to feel that skinny does indeed feel great for me. And even though I do love my desserts... if I were not able to stay slim through exercise, I would of course cut back on my creme brulee and cakes. I would rather never eat another creme brulee for the rest of my life than be over weight. But that's just me. I'm happy like that. I understand what Kate meant when she said Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels, indeed. Now, is that so wrong?

Call me flat chested, call me a sack of bones, or even comment anonymously that I have thunderous fat thighs in a bid to pull down my self esteem. I am what I am, and I love my body.

How To Shrink Pores

Dear Holly Jean,

I have combination skin. The area around my nose and cheeks have enlarged pores.

I tried home remedies such as using baking soda as an exfoliant but it burns my skin. I think my skin is too sensitive for that.

Even when I use make up, my face still looks dull and uneven. How do I shrink my pores so my skin becomes even again?

From,
Orange Skin
------------------------

Dear Orange Skin,

Some of us have naturally noticeable pores, while some periodically have more open pores due to environmental conditions or skin irritation. And some have large pores due to recurring acne. Pores on the face and nose may grow and become larger in times of higher temperatures and humidity. Your pores become enlarged when you sweat and release oil.

Avoid squeezing pores no matter how tempting it is to try to remove the dirt and oil quickly. Aggressive squeezing can damage the surrounding skin as well as the pore, making the area look worse than it did to begin with.

Whatever the case the solution is simple and easy.
1. Gently wash your face twice a day. Sometimes, a buildup of oil can cause pores to become clogged and end up being enlarged.

2. Soak a washcloth in a bowl of cold water with cucumber slices. Apply cloth on your face for 5 or 10 minutes. Just as heat opens pores, the cold closes them.
3. To conceal pores, I recommend the Acne Pore Smooth Concealer from ettusais. Our pores are visible because of shadows caused by light on the enlarged pores and excess sebum. This product maintains your skin's sebum balance with AC-control Oil and it contains very fine powders to help disperse light and absorb excess sebum. Not only does it conceal open pores but it treats rough skin too. So your skin won't look dull.
Just scoop a little bit out with the little spatula and dab onto your open pore areas.

4. Finally use foundation/powder which are formulated to conceal and treat open pores. (Such as Zero Pore Pact) Large pores will be less visible, and your skin tone will appear much more even.

It's easy to shrink and/or conceal pores for a smooth, even complexion and perfect looking skin.

:) Put your best face forward.

Holly Jean.

It's Christmas Wardrobe Time!

Advertorial

Shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, before I stock up for Christmas parties and lunches... I got to shop for clothes for my Perth trip next week.

I've got the perfect dress to wear to visit Grandma. (It's spring down under).
Sweet right?! I'm so in love with soft florals now. It's so comfy, and floral flirty. This dress even has a ribbon tie at the back. Mark pointed out that hey it hides my tattoo... but there's no need to hide it... my Grandma's cool. For a almost 90 year old, she's more broad minded than some of the people my age!
.
That dress is from THEAPPARELAFFAIR.COM which is an online fashion site and not blog shop/livejournal etc. It has exclusive handpicked, designed and manufactured apparels. So you'll see unique pieces there.
The floral dresses also come in other floral prints and designs. I love them all. Think I'll go floral crazy this Christmas.
Also check out their collection of lace dresses. They're dressier and more formal than florals but just as feminine and sweet.
The big shoulder and puffy shoulder trend is making its way back into the fashion scene. The ApparelAffair hasn't missed out on this of course.
And this same dress can be worn two ways, with the zipper behind or infront. :)

TheApparelAffair is offering Free Local Normal Postage all year round.
THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS PROMOTION: ALL apparels from #101 to #413 are only at S$22.90 per apparel. (*not valid for further discount*)
---------------------------

Especially for my Readers:
Don't miss out on getting an even better deal!
Get 15% off total bill with purchase of 2 apparels OR 5% off if only purchasing 1 apparel. Just simply quote the code HJ2111.
My readers will also be entitled to membership [this gives you discounts etc] with the purchase of 3 apparels in a single invoice (the usual is 4 apparels).

Ok, next post- I just shot a video on how to do Party Tricks. Will edit it this afternoon. Now.. have to go Bedok to have lunch with mom and dad.

The Prom Prep Post

Short is the way to go in 2009! Finally, we've gotten rid of the long gown prom trend and embraced showing some leg. Paying attention to detail is the key to dress up a mini frock, so go for pretty bows or fun ruffles and you MUST accessorise!

Look at my JC prom night a decade ago!!! Everyone in dowdy long gowns (except tht one girl in the middle.. but still... GREYYY!!!??). Guess which girl is me??

(I'm the third girl from the right, in the boring black halter) In hindsight... I shouldn't have gotten that black dress tailored.. and should have turned up in a hot pink tube dress. But it wasn't the trend then I guess... it never crossed any of our minds.

I've been getting loads of emails from sec school/JC girls regarding prom dresses, and make up for that big night. So I've consolidated everything (sorry if you never got a reply personally), and come up with a whole post to prepare you for your prom!

Click on any of the pics for more info on getting that particular item.

Holly Jean's Prom Dress Choices for 2009

The Classic Little Black Dress
Every girl needs a little black dress... in fact, I have several. I love tube dresses, and satin makes the dress more formal.[Obi waist strapless dress $39 ]

The Lace Dress
Last year was all about beading and (cheap looking) plastic gems sewn on to the neckline of dresses. Thank god that's out now... YUCK! But this year lace has taken hold as the most popular embellishment. LOVE IT! Lace is sexy and flirty.
[Laceback dress $27.90 ][Lace toga $25 ]

Stand Out In Colour
Color will always stand out in a crowd of black dresses. If you want to make a statement, wear a bold colour. [Racy pink party dress $29.90 ]

If you're not confident in carrying out a complete dose of colour, try choosing a dress with bright coloured details (like a bow or a waistband).
[Black & Red Prom Dress P-5742 $119]

The Red Carpet Look
If you want a touch of glamour to your night, go with a celebrity-inspired dress. Personally, I like White. White is elegant, chic and glamorous. If you have a healthy tan, white will make you glow. (Goes well with delicate [NOT CHUNKY PLEASE] gold accessories and shoes!)[Jodie Sequin Dress $56]

Accessorise!
Cotton roses trendy and feminine. Get creative...it's nice on a belt, in your hair, or even around your wrist as a corsage. Ribbon/bow accessories are pretty too! Go to Bugis Village/Far East to get them.
If you're going for a less cutesy and more elegant look, then forget the ribbons and roses... get gold accessories instead.

Your Face
Please don't go to your prom with a nice dress and accessories but with no make up on. You will regret it because you will look shitty and there will be pictures to remind you of it. I regret not using more colour on my face for my prom. I think back then, I didn't even pencil in my eyebrows!!!

But you, can learn from my mistakes :)

Metallics
A great look now is with light metallic eyes. If you're all about gold, glam, and glitz, get a hold of some iridescent powders and blend them on your eyelid. Or use a metallic eyeliner, like ettusais' Pencil Eye Glitter. It’s all about having fun experimenting with metallic color!
Note: Focus on one feature. Don't go metallic over your whole face! But I think that's common sense right...

Rocker Chick
No more emo looks pleaseeeee! If you like dark eyes, and want to go over the top with your black eyeliner, then go for a smoky eye rocker chick look. Just make sure your smoky eyes have an edgy black dress and rebellious attitude to match; otherwise, you'll be clashing styles.

When I first tried to get a smokey eye look, I made the mistake of using only black eye shadow. Looked like I got punched. The trick is, to use 3 shades.. from light brown for the whole lid, then a dark brown and lastly a little bit of black. Blend Blend Blend.

I've actually shot 4 make up instructional videos with MyFatPocket a while ago... but they're not done with editing. Will update you as soon as you can view them (before the prom hopefully! Otherwise you can use them as Christmas party looks)
So exciting... wish I had a prom to go to :(

Good news is... I've got a few Christmas wardrobe sponsorships coming in... yay! Will show you all that in December. And I have a cocktail thing to attend tomorrow evening, and a Christmas party on the 9th of Dec, and another party when I am in Perth next week. Can't wait to add more events... love dressing up... love the Holiday Season!!

Note: [Although there are many product recommendations in this post, it is not an Advertorial. I wasn't paid to list any of the products here]

Blah Blah Blah and All The Rest Of It

I've got a new dress (sponsored by FashionPod ).Loving it. It's similar to the dress from Victoria Beckham's collection... The bottom of the waist skirts out. Very feminine and pretty. Mine's in a shimmery denim blue and tailored for asian proportions! Was at the White Rabbit at Dempsey on Saturday night. Service in the restaurant was poor, as usual. But the food I had that night was fab!!!
I didn't order a starter because my main course was a beef tenderloin topped with Foie gras! My starter and main course rolled into one. Excellent. And the beef was super duper tender and tasty. For dessert it was creme brulee which was just right... I remember having their deconstructed version of the black forest cake there the last time, and it scarred me. I haven't had another slice of black forest since.
Haven't been there in months... and now they have these huge white chairs and tables in the back yard.
Gives it a very Alice In Wonderland feel. I like!
-----------

Next up... I'm going to visit my grandma, my favourite cousin and all the gang in Perth. Think I'll go in the last week of November... I have to be back by the 5th of Dec for Sarah's wedding.
.
Not going to stay with my cousin this time, because Mark is travelling with me, and we'd like the privacy of our own place. Might spend 3 nights in Perth City (visiting relatives, shopping, eating, casino), and then the next 3 nights on some vineyard.... either Swan Valley or Margaret River.
.
Any recommendations on hotels to stay in Perth City? Or the vineyard stay?? Car rentals?? Any input is much appreciated...(bear in mind that all this is pretty last minute bookings already, so you can forget about me booking farm stays and such).
.
I don't want to do Freo, Rotto etc... done it when I was a teenager... but haven't lived on a vineyard before... so I would like to do that.

Don't Tell Your Man This

This week on My Fat Pocket, I've written about the secrets you should keep to yourself when it comes to relationships. Do you agree that some things should be secrets??

Click Here if you want to read other similar articles :)
------------

When you meet a potential Mr Right (and as luck would have it, he’s interested in you too) it can be easy to think you should tell him everything in preparation for your perfect life together.

But there are some things which will spoil it for him and leave you wondering what the hell happened. So here are ten things you should never tell your man:

1. You Cheated In The Past

Even if you’ve turned over a new leaf and will never cheat on him, do not tell him that you’ve cheated on any previous boyfriends. This will not only speak poorly about your character but it will also scare him. After all, most relationships start out as happy ones; if you ended up cheating on your exes then what will stop you from cheating on him?

2. Your Best Friend Is Cheating

Sometimes we girls like to make ourselves look better in the eyes of our man by revealing how bad our girlfriends are. But this often backfires because men won’t see that Halo you’re trying to create over your own head… but they will see you and your cheating best friends as birds of a feather.

3. You Don’t Like His Penis

You should never tell your man that his penis is small, thin or *gasp* deformed. He’s obviously is stuck with it. So how will telling him change anything?! Your man IS his penis. If you don’t like his penis, you’re basically saying you don’t like him.

4. You Don’t Like A Body Part Of Yours
Men are visual creatures… but they are also easily deceived visually. If you point out your flaws, they will start noticing it.

One example is, for many months, the guy I was dating didn’t realize my eyelashes were fake! Now they were not modest lashes but the fullest set of lash extensions I could get. Ever since I pointed them out to him, he started to notice the fake lashes. So imagine what would happen if I told him I thought one nostril was smaller than the other or my thighs were thick?! Don’t break the illusion!

5. How Many People You Really Slept With

As a rule of thumb, divide the real number by three (haha). The past is the past… does it really matter how many men you have been with? No, it will not change the way you feel for him. But if you tell him a high number, he will come to the conclusion that you have lousy taste in men or that you aren’t exactly wife material. You don’t want him to think that you’ve been around the block (even if you have).

6. How He Compares To Your Exes

Men are competitive. They get curious about how they compare to the men that were with you before them. If he wants to know if he is a better than your ex, this is dangerous territory to enter. Even if he tells you that he isn’t going to get angry, as soon as you start talking about your ex that jealous side of him will come out. Avoid this topic if you can but definitely don’t ever tell him that you’ve been with someone bigger or better.

7. He Reminds You Of Your Father

Although you might feel like this is a compliment, it actually freaks men out. If you’re in a sexual relationship, telling him that he reminds you of your dad is a turn off. It’s just strange to think that you would want to be in a romantic relationship with someone like your father. Yuck.

8. What You Do In The Bathroom

Women don’t smell bad or burp or fart or shit. When we sit on the toilet, we pee rainbows. Men do not want to think about their beautiful women on the toilet. Period.

9.Do You Think She’s Pretty?

Of course they do! Their standards are much lower than ours! So if you ask them this question, there’s never a right answer. If he says she’s pretty, you’ll be upset. If he says she’s not, you’ll think he’s a liar. When an attractive woman walks by, it's best to just pretend nothing happened.

10. Did You Sleep With Her?

As long as she’s not sleeping with him now, who cares? The past is gone. Don't torture yourself (and him) by harping on the past. In most cases, ignorance really is bliss.

Let's Make Up

Hello girls :)
I've taken step by step pics of my basic make up routine so I can share them with you how to get a flawless base. Absolutely no photoshop has been used (I never photoshop my blog pics anyway).

I start with a clean face, moisturised but no make up. Notice that my skin tone is slightly uneven, and there's a small pimple on my cheek (circled in red). Wish I could demo with a bigger pimple... but I rarely get pimples now!
Step 1: Medicated Whitening UV EX dry block (sgd$41)
This is a light weight pre-makeup base with SPF 24PA ++. It's important that I protect my skin from UV rays before I step out of the house. It does not cover pimples (pimple still visible on my cheek) but it prevents breakouts and lightens imperfections. Since it's a pre-makeup base, it keeps my make up on my face longer and prevents shine. The dry block formula is good for dehydrated skin like mine. If you have oily skin, it also comes in an Oil Block formula for you.

Step 2: AC Pore Smooth Concealer(sgd$36)
This concealer only comes in one colour... why? Because unlike other concealers, it doesn't mask your imperfection by coating it with a lighter colour. It actually has very fine particles which disperse light to reduce the look of enlarged pores or imperfections.

When your skin is uneven, your pores look larger because of the shadow caused by light as well as from the shine from excess sebum. So the fine particles in this concealer actually reflects light giving your skin a more even finish.

But don't worry, all these particles do not clog pores, in fact it actually prevents inflamation and helps your skin retain moisture. This product comes with a small spatula... just take a small amount from the jar and dab onto areas of imperfection on your face.

After this step, the skin around my nose and cheek area has evened out and my pimple is no longer visible. Whoohooo!

Step 3: Zero Pore Pact (dry block) (refill :sgd$48, Case sgd$20)
I use the dry block in 30 Beige. If you have oily skin, you can opt for the Oil Block instead. The Zero Pore Pact gives a flawless poreless finish. It's so light that it doesn't flake or cake up. Yet it is able to give smooth and even coverage.
Pimple no longer visible, skin tone evened out, and my face looks bright and fresh. It's so important to get your base make up right because your skin is like a canvas. If you do not get a good flawless base, then no matter how skillful you are in applying colours or how big a cosmetic pallete you have, you're not going to look your best.
After achieving a flawless base, I've opted for a sweet natural look for today. So a lot of soft pinks: Cheek is PK3, Lipgloss PK4, Eyebrows filled in with dark brown eyebrow pencil, no eyeshadow but I highlighted just underneath my brow bone.

KUCHING: What To See? What To Do?

It's actually easy to get around Kuching... the people are friendly and helpful .. and most of them speak English, so communication is no problem at all.
The first thing we did when we got there was walk along the Sarawak river, just outside our hotel. There were also short cruises available at just $60 ringgit but I thought it looked a bit boring.

But there's quite a bit to do along the river walk itself. On sunday there are bands playing (though I didn't think they sounded good)... little stalls sell bits of jewellery and bags... and pop corn!
With a map, we walked for about 15 mins in search of the Sarawak Museum. Across from the Padang, are a few museums. Art Museum, Old history museum, new museum... etc. Most are free to enter, while some charge a small fee (a few ringgits only).
Because they're all clustered together, you can pop in all the museums and cover them in about an hour (or two if you want to stand and stare at every single thing).
There are day tours (about 5 to 7 hours) available which involve visiting Longhouses and villages, but I was happy enough to experience them in the comfort of a museum really. There are many temples that you'll pass along the way to the musuem. We skipped the Cat Museum, I heard it was not worth the effort.
Their streets (for instance Carpenter St) are filled with little souvenier and wood craft shops. There were a lot of sarongs, scarves and weave bags too. After walking about (it's hot!) we treated ourselves to a quick 30 minute foot rub. Can't tell you which one we went to... so many reflexology shops there. We just chose a random one. It was $25 ringgit for a half hour.
In the centre of the city, there's a huge cat monument/fountain... you're unlikely to miss it. And across from that, we found a massage place, it's the builidng with the Mcdonald's.
We had a 1 hour full body massage (with free ear candling) at only $55 ringgit a person. This is my second time ear candling in my life... and I still think it's bullshit. No effect. The massage was good, just Mark and I in a couple room. She flipped the towel down and massaged my boobs too though (!)... quite strange... never had that done during a massage before! At about 70 ringgit a person, there's a Matang Wildlife Centre day trip available. It's a 3 hour trip in total, inclusive of the drive to the wildlife centre and back(about 45 mins each way). Here you can see orang utans and other rescued wildlife. But don't expect that you get to cuddle baby chimps and feed them milk from the bottle... most of them are semi-wild.... Apart from wildlife centres, there are also kayaking trips available, but those take the whole day. And we didn't have the time. Here I am at the Kuching Airport on Monday afternoon, heading home. Flying Malaysian Airlines of course. I had a great little weekend adventure.

KUCHING: Where to Stay? Where To Eat?

Kuching, "Cat City", is a medium-sized town on Eastern Island of Borneo, in the State Sarawak.
When we got off the plane, the first thing that struck me about their airport was how modern it was. It was relatively big and had all the duty free alcohol, cosmetics and perfume shops one would expect from a good International airport. Plus a Starbucks AND Coffeebean.Once out of the airport... it's easy to get a taxi from their budget taxi counter. A standard flat rate of (Malaysian Ringgit)$26 takes you to your hotel in the city. I love that it's all hassel free... you don't get touts and people trying to rip tourists off with an inflated taxi fare into town.As recommended by some blog readers, we chose the Hilton. We made reservations for 2 nights at a total of (Singapore dollars)$520.And when we got there, the Hilton upgraded us up to their Penthouse Suite! (Good thing we didn't spend the extra 300SGD to book THAT in the first place! I was very happppy.) The bedroom had a great view of the river and the city. And the bathroom and lounge area was nice too. No complaints about the suite. But what I hated about Kuching's Hilton was that their pool was shitty looking, their tennis court was old, and their Gym was under construction (upgrading!)... so not much to do there in terms of exercise! But other than that, the food, rooms, and staff are top notch.

Of course, there are many cheaper alternatives available at Kuching. In fact, Tune hotels ( like ten bucks a night!) is just across the street from Hilton. So if you don't mind not having a river view, and just want a room to sleep in, this is a great budget hotel. I stayed in it when I was in KL... and I remember paying $10 for the room... and then you add on $ for additional things like 10 hour blocks of air-con, toiletries, etc.

-------------
ok now... FOOD FOOD FOOD!

Ok... to be honest, when I first looked around the town... I thought... OMG there's no where decent to eat at. But with a little perserverance and asking around... we found a few great places which you must check out when in Kuching. And the prices!!! Great food at great places ... but such low prices!

James Brooke Bistro & Cafe

We had lunch here. It's by the river, just infront of the Hilton. James Brooke was the first Governor of Serawak. They called him the first White Rajah. It's open air but not hot. Good for a lazy lunch. They serve both western and Asian cuisine. Mark had a chicken salad, mango juice (x2) while I had chicken wings and wedges and a coke. The bill only came up to $40 Ringgit (less than 20 Sing$) The Junk Restaurant

The first night there, we were looking for somewhere quirky and trendy to eat at... and we made reservations at a restaurant called The Junk. I wore my new dress and shoes.. ( for those asking for pics of my $10 shoes... here it is!!)The ambiance of the place was fantastic, relaxing mood lighting. It's a two story shophouse, filled with bits of the old and bits of the new. It kinda looked like a collection of junk really. But well put together. It even had a nice little bar in the backyard. And the food was excellent! I had lamb rack and Mark had a lamb shank. We shared a brocolli soup and bruchetta to start with. And I found a new favourite drink.... kinda like a Lychee Martini... it's a Longan Vodka! Very niceeee...Total damage for the night (inclusive of a few more glasses of wine and beers as well): $150 ringgit. No way you can get all that food AND drinks for 2 people in a restaurant setting for $70 Sing dollars in Singapore!

Magenta...

The second night there... we were spoilt for choice. We had a few restaurants we wanted to check out... first, we went to Magenta, which serves an Western Asian fusion cuisine.. and they had Foie Gras on the menu!!

It was a ten minute taxi ride from our hotel. When we got there... the restaurant itself looked inviting. Set in a house, it had a strong eastern-oriental flavour to it. But at 8 O'clock... it was still empty! I'm sure the food would have been good.... but we wanted something more buzzy for our last night in Kuching.
So we popped back into a taxi and went down to Bla Bla Bla....which is actually only a few doors down from The Junk.
Bla bla bla... Restaurant
I think they called it bla bla bla... because quite frankly, you wouldn't know what else to call it! It's hard to place Bla Bla Bla. The decor... is... interesting. You can dine upstairs... but the ground floor has much more buzz and activity! To get to your table... you have to step over a pond of fish...The tables and chairs are.. rough. No.. I don't mean uncomfortable.. but it's just not a refined look. Even the walls are like unfinished and rough cement. Feels like dining in a cave or an old village... yet it's beautifully balanced with elements of the modern.. like a huge chandelier casting a warm glow over the dining area, colourful cushions and huge white crockery. We ordered peking duck... yum.... that one peking duck made 15 huge pancake rolls of duck skin and a stir-fry duck meat dish. The pancake rolls were delicious!
Mark swears that he only ate 4 or 5 rolls, so I must have eaten all the rest! I love duck! But I think I overdid it that night. After dinner, I felt very uncomfortable. I ate so much that I felt like if you tickled me or made a sudden jab, I would vomit. No kidding. I even had my head on the table towards the end of the night and a lady at the next table noticed and smiled (ok.. laughed).

What can I say...? I'm not going to make any excuses.. it was just shameful glutonny. :( Total bill was also around $150 ringgit, but we had much less alcohol than at the Junk. How could I drink anyway?! I was too full of duck.
Other popular restaurants we didn't manage to dine at in our 2 days there were- Top Spot which serves cheap but good seafood, Tom's which suppposedly has nice desserts, and Mango Tree which serve Thai food. For drinks, there's Senso at the Hilton which is more swanky, and a pub called The Living Room which is more rustic and laid back... all worth checking out if you're in Kuching.
Next post- What to see and do in Kuching :)
By the way, you can check out the latest offers on flights to Malaysia here: So far, I've been to KL(last year), Penang( few months ago) and Kota Kinabalu (as a child), so I think I'd probably check out Langkawi next... but I do want to climb Mount Kinabalu... and I want to visit Malacca too because of my Peranakan roots. Too many places, too little time!!

Sponsored Trip to Kuching

A few months ago, I flew Malaysia Airlines to a party in Penang. And I was very impressed with the great value and service.

So, of course, I'm very pleased that I've just been made an SG Blogger for Malaysia Airlines!

My inaugral trip as their Blogger is to Kuching! I'm having a pretty good time here.

Checking in is a painless process.
You can do a Web Check In through the Malaysian Airlines Website and arrive at the airport just 1 hour before departure. There are also self service kiosks at KLIA for self check in.
Up to 20 kg baggage allowance (no need to pay extra for baggage allowance if you're a big shopper!)

Malaysia Airlines has The Golden Lounge for first and business class guests. But I was given the privilege of enjoying this perk.

It offers guest complementary food, beverage and internet access. The lounge is very comfortable, it offers a good selection of food and booze so that makes waiting time very enjoyable.Flying with Malysia Airlines is surprisingly good value. It offers extra comfort & convenience compared to travelling with budget airlines. There's better seat pitch (space between two seats – front and back), assigned seating and free food and ammenities. The In-flight services provided by cabin crew is on par with Singapore Airlines. I've mentioned this before when I flew to Penang. And this time round, they still didn't fail to deliver.
As the plane descended on Kuching, I was captivated by the view of natural lush greenery. This city is just 1 hour away from home and yet it's so unlike Singapore! There's a beauty and simple charm about Kuching.
Next couple of Posts - I'll update you on What to See and Where to Eat (yum!) in Kuching.

My Phone Bill !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got my Starhub bill.

In the 2 days that I spent in Indonesia last month... I racked up SGD$400 on my phone bill. Thank God I wasn't there for like a week or something!

$400 for like 2 days.... that's like more than twice the price of my air ticket there! And I was barely on the phone.

One 25 minute long phone call to my then ex (Mark) was $110 alone (that's more than my usual phone bill for a whole month!). WTF?

Ok... I'm leaving for Kuching tomorrow. Will be back Monday. If not important... don't call me. :( I'm feeling very poor at the moment.

Free INQ Mini 3G Mobile Phone

For those who did not manage to go down to the INQ roadshow at Plaza Singapura last week... good news is... you can still get your INQ Mini 3G mobile phone ... at $0!

You will still enjoy Free registration and Free SIM card charge... so it's REALLY is $0 to get your new phone. And also 3 free battery covers... so you can change the colour of your phone anytime. This same E-voucher is now redeemable at all hello stores till 30 Nov 2009. (Click It To Print It)

Mixed Martial Arts: The next HOT thing in SG!

As most of you would know, I finished my personal training sessions with Jonathan a couple of weeks ago... and I've gone back to my regular swimming routine and my own (now only weekly though) gym session but I've been itching to do something new... like a dance class (was thinking of Lindy Hop), or boxing, or yoga.

So I was looking through youtube for instructional videos and I came across this video on Mixed Martial Arts.

And the first thing I thought was - man that's a cool looking gym! And surprise surprise, at the end of the video, I saw an SPH logo... so I googled Evolve and believe it or not, the #1 MMA academy in Asia is right here in Singapore! It's called Evolve Mixed Martial Arts.

In fact there's 2, one in Raffles Place and the other in Dhoby Ghaut. (It looks like they are adding more locations too) I've never noticed these gyms there before, have you???
I'm quite hyped about it though.... I'll get myself a cute kit. Paint my toe nails (what? Cannot have pretty feet for class is it?!). Learn a few impressive moves. Get into even better shape, lose weight, get mentally stronger, and learn how to kick some butt! :) Woot, woot!

They have classes for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Street Self Defense, Fitness Training, Boxing, and Submission Grappling. I read that MMA is a blend of the best martial arts so you can burn up to 1,000 calories an hour! OMG!

I've checked out their website.. they have an impressive list of very qualified instructors. They're world champions from all over ... many from Brazil and USA... but this one caught my eye... Hello Sir!!
Hot right???!!! Hmm.. I wonder if Evolve will hook me up with an introductory Muay Thai lesson with him... lol.. I'd make a video for you girls to drool. haha :)
The cool thing about Evolve is that it has premium state-of-the-art, modern and sleek facilities. They are open 7 days a week from 630am to 1030pm with classes all day which is great for me since I don't have a fixed schedule for work... I can pop in for a class any morning, afternoon, night that I'm free.
Of course, I'll only be in it for the training and not fighting/sparring. They have programmes for complete beginners like ME and advance competitors. They even have classes for kids so I'm sure that with qualified instructors it's going to be super safe.

You can check Evolve out here - CLICK
Let me know what you think.... I'm still excited.

They didn't state the memberhsip fees on the site...but I'll call them soon for a free Trial Class. Woot!!!

Dick Hoyt My Hero

Mark told me about this video yesterday, so I searched for it on youtube. I cried, I think you will too.

A Son asked his father, "Dad, will you take part in a marathon with me?" The father who, despite having a heart condition, says "Yes". They went on to complete the marathon together. Father and son went on to join other marathons. The father always saying "Yes" to his son's request of going through the race together. One day, the son asked his fater, "Dad, let's join the Ironman together."To which, his father said "Yes".

For those who don't know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever.

Watch.

Dick Hoyt is 66 years old! I love my dad a LOT... but this guy gets title of SuperDad.

Don't you agree?

Next time you think your life it tough... think again.
